Courvoisier’s modern official history distinguishes the predecessor Gallois cellars, established in Paris in 1796, from the Cognac house itself, which Félix Courvoisier and Jules Gallois established in Jarnac in 1828. This makes 1828 the most defensible founding year for the producer as a dedicated Cognac house, although older references sometimes use other dates from the family’s earlier trade. From Jarnac the company developed a major international brand based on long-term relationships with growers, careful selection of eaux-de-vie from several crus and extensive maturation and blending stocks. Courvoisier’s historical image is strongly associated with nineteenth-century France and the Napoleonic era, but its production identity is that of a large multi-cru blending house rather than a single estate. In the twenty-first century it remains one of Cognac’s globally recognized major houses, with the Jarnac headquarters and cellar system at the center of its continuity.
