Martell was founded in 1715 by Jean Martell and is the oldest of Cognac’s major historic houses. From its base on the Charente it developed international trade early and built a distinctive production style around careful sourcing, distillation and maturation. Martell is particularly known for distilling clear wines from which the heavy lees have been removed and for ageing in fine-grained French oak, choices the house links to finesse, aromatic clarity and elegant texture. The house has long worked with several Cognac crus, with Borderies holding a special place in its history and blending vocabulary. Over three centuries, Martell has grown from an eighteenth-century merchant enterprise into a global producer while retaining a clearly articulated technical house style. Its importance lies in the combination of exceptional age, early export history, large blending reserves and production choices that remain deliberately different from houses that favor full-lees distillation.
