Hennessy was founded in Cognac in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish-born officer who settled in France and established what became one of the world’s defining Cognac houses. Over more than 260 years the company developed a global trading network, very large reserves of aged eaux-de-vie and a highly structured system of grower relationships, tasting and blending. A central part of its technical continuity is the Fillioux family’s long association with the role of master blender, extending across eight generations, alongside Hennessy’s formal tasting committee and extensive cellar stocks. Hennessy is not a single-estate producer; its scale depends on selecting eaux-de-vie from across the Cognac appellation and assembling them to reproduce house style consistently over time. The house’s significance lies both in production and in industry history: it helped make Cognac an international luxury spirit and remains a benchmark for large-scale blending, ageing logistics, sensory selection and long-term partnerships with the region’s growers.
